Treatment for your skin is all around very similar once you reach your 20’s, but depending on your concerns and your goals, skincare products, and treatments can slightly vary. As we age unfortunately so does our skin. When we’re young our cells turnover at a much faster rate which explains the plumper, smoother skin. When we enter our 20’s our cells turnover every 28 days, that’s about once a month, when we reach our 30’s our cells turnover every 38 days, 40’s it’s every 48 days- see where I am going with this? Skincare products, with active ingredients and doing regular facial treatments help speed up our cell's metabolism so our cell turnover rate can be better than every 2 months. Which will also help you look younger, brighter, and more refreshed. Skincare for your 50’s and beyond will look very similar to skincare in your 40’s. At this point, you want to do everything to maintain. Products out now can help with the collagen and elastin in your skin along with some in-office medical procedures. Your skincare routine will be exactly like how it is for when you were in your 40’s:

Cleanse: Make sure you’re cleansing morning and night with the appropriate cleanser for your skin type.

Exfoliate: Twice a week with a scrub or mask that is appropriate for your skin type.

Eye Cream: If you didn’t start eye cream in your 40’s start today. Our skin around the eyes is so delicate and thin we need to care for that carefully. Ever notice when someone looks tired they automatically appear older? The skin around the eyes starts to droop and darken. Avoid looking tired and old!

Serum: Serums are our functional products, they seep into the skin and actively work! Pick up an anti-aging serum that maybe has some peptides and antioxidants in it. If you’re concerned with hyperpigmentation or dark spots pick up a serum with Vitamin C. If you have little concerns with your skin—Feel very lucky!– pick up something that has hyaluronic acid in it.

Moisturize: Morning and Night your morning moisturizer should have an SPF of 30 or higher and preferable have either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide in it. Nighttime you want to look for something that has retinol in it. Retinol is an ingredient that helps with cell turnover. Increasing cell turnover helps with fine lines, wrinkles, and the overall look of your skin.

Neck Cream: In your 20’s and 30’s you can get away with just massaging moisturizer down into the neck but once you reach your 40’s you need to be using a neck cream specifically designed to target aging areas on that part of your body. If you didn’t start in your 40’s START TODAY! Tech neck is real and it’s not cute!

Treatments depending on your skin type should mimic the same in your 40’s as well, unless the sun damage and aging are very severe you can look into doing lasers or plasma pen therapy. You can also research Ultherapy. Ultherapy is a treatment I do in my office that helps firm and tighten the skin around the eyes, jowls, and neck.

If you treat your skin as early as possible and educate your children on the importance of sunscreen (sun damage is the number 1 cause of why our skin has fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots) you can slow the skin from aging at an accelerated rate.
